The Department of Early Music teaches music composed before the 18th century using the instruments that were typical of that period.

Baroque violin - Music

Baroque violin

  • The Baroque violin, a musical instrument used from the Baroque period to the end of the 18th century, differs from the modern violin in that it has gut strings, a specific construction, no chin rest, requires a different bowing technique and the use of ancient tuning forks.
  • Admission requires some ability on the violin, as evidenced by a certificate of completion of stage two or by audition.
Viola da gamba, treble and bass

Viola da gamba, treble and bass

  • Individual tuition
  • The viola da gamba has returned to the musical scene, rediscovered along with Renaissance and Baroque music after falling into obscurity from the 18th to the 20th century. Its name ‘da gamba’ derives from the fact that it is held between the knees. The terms ‘treble’ and bass' refer to their ranges.
  • From the age of 7 (on 31 August, stage 2.2 of primary education).

Mandoline

  • Individual tuition
  • The mandolin, with its understated sound, is played with a plectrum in order to produce its characteristic tremolos. It is a popular instrument of Italian origin, but also has a rich classical repertoire.

Harpsichord - Music

Harpsichord

  • Individual tuition
  • The harpsichord is an emblematic instrument of the Baroque period, with one or more keyboards, and is distinguished by its unique sound, which has been rediscovered thanks to the revival of Baroque musical practice.
  • Accessible from the age of 7 (stage 2.2 of primary education) with the possibility of earlier admission after audition.

Recorder

  • Individual tuition
  • Recorders come in various sizes and can be played in various ranges (sopranino, soprano, alto, tenor, bass) and can be played in independent ensembles. The soprano recorder is particularly popular for beginners.
  • Accessible from the age of 7 (stage 2.2 of primary education) with the possibility of earlier admission after audition.
Sackbut - Music

Sackbut

  • Individual tuition
  • The sackbut is the ancestor of the trombone and took its final form in the 14th century and is available in four ranges (soprano, alto, tenor, bass). With its gentle sound, it can accompany the human voice or be combined with other ancient instruments for festive events.
  • Admission requires some ability on the trombone, as evidenced by a certificate of completion of stage two or by audition.

Baroque singing

  • Baroque and Renaissance singing relates to vocal music from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. The emphasis is on early Baroque (first half of the 17th century), a period that saw the intersection of Renaissance polyphony, the madrigal style, ornamentation and the emergence of representative and recitative styles.
  • Admission requires some knowledge of classical singing, as evidenced by a certificate of completion of stage two or by audition.
